Jonathan Shillingford is a jazz trumpet player based in New York City. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, he draws inspiration from his hometown’s rich culture, especially from his Caribbean heritage. Since arriving in New York, he has played on historic stages such as Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall, Birdland Jazz Club, Smoke Jazz Club, the Jazz Gallery, Dizzy’s Club and Smalls Jazz Club.
The goal of the project was to design and develop a website for the artist, with a new visual identity. The inspiration and direction for the project stemmed from Shillingford's description of his own playing as trying to "deconstruct the trumpet". In order to enter the website's homepage, the user is presented with an animation of a trumpet coming apart and being separated until there are only abstract shapes, and are no longer recognizeable as a trumpet. These shapes are graphic elements used throughout the website, alluding to the trumpet and its individual parts.
